Oh, Galveston…
Well, we decided to spend the actual day of our Anniversary in Galveston. Isn’t this image adorable? Our family is toasting to our 17 years. We enjoyed this occasion at the Fisherman’s Wharf on Galveston’s Bay.
The waterfront view was spectacular…oh what more could a couple want? There is SO much history in Galveston and this restaurant is no different…the site originally housed a shrimp and fish “factory” – an old tin building where mountains of Gulf shrimp were readied for shipment across the country.

What is Elissa?
Elissa is a three-masted, iron-hulled sailing ship built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland by Alexander Hall & Company.
Unlike some tall ships of today Elissa is not a replica, but a survivor. She was built during the decline of the “Age of Sail” to fill a niche in maritime commerce. Over her 90-year commercial history she carried a variety of cargos to ports around the world, for a succession of owners. Her working life as a freighter came to an end in Piraeus Harbor, Greece, where she was rescued from the scrap yard by a variety of ship preservationists who refused to let her die. The story of Elissa’s discovery and restoration is nothing short of miraculous, and is beautifully retold in photographs and a video presentation at the Texas Seaport Museum.
“Little Man” a full tummy makes for a happy baby!
Do you remember the world-famous country music song “Galveston” made popular by Glen Campbell in 1969? It has been remade once again – this time in a marketing campaign for the Texas beach town the song was named after.
They did a terrific job in producing this video…I enjoyed it immensely. I hope you will take a minute to view it.

Galveston has a particular charm. Glen Campbell’s song about the town is one of his best, I think.

My brother lived in Galveston Bay for a few years before he sold his home and moved to Colorado…loved walking thru the historic homes in Galveston, just a beautiful city. Enjoy your time spent and looking forward to more photos!!

Those pinkish gates make a terrific shot, as does Elissa from almost any angle. We have an original tall ship in our own harbour too so I’m very fond of them.
You bloggers could have a meetup! I’m sure Island Traveller lives near to Galveston as he often features it in his beautiful posts, and I noticed in the comments that Ron Scubadiver (and his lovely wife Lynne) is not far away! You’d all be singing “Galveston, oh-oh Galveston” 🙂

Thanks for the memories! I loved Galveston. I spent more than half my lifetime living in Houston, and have so many wonderful memories of Galvestion, ie….prom night! Madi Gras…My very first trip to Galveston was in 1951 when I was 8yrs old. Our whole family got badly sunburned!! My dad was a broadcaster with KXYZ radio and actually went to work without his shirt on!! 🙂 Thanks again. (I now live in E. Tennessee…retired)

Galveston oh Galveston! That’s what I thought of when I saw your title. The new version is not bad but I like Glen Campbell’s version better. I remember hearing it on the radio when I was a teenager lol 🙂

It only takes an hour to get there, but I have not been down to Galveston this season.
I liked the rendition of the old Glen Campbell song, what a good update. Looks like a fab place. We actually had considered a visit here on our honeymoon but they had a bad storm there and so we stayed at a resort on Mustang Island. Maybe we’ll go back for an anniversary too. Happy Anniversary Laurie!

Our 56th Anniversary was the 7th. We went to Angelina’s restaurant in Bonita. Very special! What was the date were you married? Congrats and enjoy many more.
Kathy is doing great! She may be switching from the walker to a cane. She is a real trooper and her PT says her progress is right on the mark. She is coming over Tues nite for Mah Jongg. She already went out with Tom to a friends house for cards on Sat. nite. Has trouble sitting for too long. For a busy lady like she is it is very hard to stay home so much. Every day is one day toward recovery.
Happy you had such a wonderful Anniversary and interesting trip to Texas and Galveston.

Wonderful images – what a place to celebrate your anniversary. Living in South Africa my only connection with Galveston is through Glen Campbell song – “Galveston O’ Galveston” which I loved. Always been a kind of a mystical place for me.
