Oh, Galveston…
Well, we decided to spend the actual day of our Anniversary in Galveston. Isn’t this image adorable? Our family is toasting to our 17 years. We enjoyed this occasion at the Fisherman’s Wharf on Galveston’s Bay.
The waterfront view was spectacular…oh what more could a couple want? There is SO much history in Galveston and this restaurant is no different…the site originally housed a shrimp and fish “factory” – an old tin building where mountains of Gulf shrimp were readied for shipment across the country.
The beautiful entrance into Fisherman’s Wharf…vintage gates!
This was the view from our table…
What is Elissa?
Elissa is a three-masted, iron-hulled sailing ship built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland by Alexander Hall & Company.
Unlike some tall ships of today Elissa is not a replica, but a survivor. She was built during the decline of the “Age of Sail” to fill a niche in maritime commerce. Over her 90-year commercial history she carried a variety of cargos to ports around the world, for a succession of owners. Her working life as a freighter came to an end in Piraeus Harbor, Greece, where she was rescued from the scrap yard by a variety of ship preservationists who refused to let her die. The story of Elissa’s discovery and restoration is nothing short of miraculous, and is beautifully retold in photographs and a video presentation at the Texas Seaport Museum.
“Little Man” a full tummy makes for a happy baby!
Do you remember the world-famous country music song “Galveston” made popular by Glen Campbell in 1969? It has been remade once again – this time in a marketing campaign for the Texas beach town the song was named after.
They did a terrific job in producing this video…I enjoyed it immensely. I hope you will take a minute to view it.
Warning…your neck might hurt…after you head bop through the whole video. Smile.
Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin’
I still see her dark eyes glowin’
She was 21 when I left Galveston
Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston…
I will be back in a couple of days to share more fun in Galveston…

Happy Anniversary… Lots of fabulous photos, but you know your little man steels the show.. Know I will be humming that tune the rest of the morning..
Hugs~
Love the water and that boat. Fun way to celebrate. Congratulations.
Galveston has a particular charm. Glen Campbell’s song about the town is one of his best, I think.
You’ve convinced me I need to visit Galveston! I’d go just for one of those yummy-looking drinks. Happy anniversary! How wonderful that you got to celebrate with your family, including “Little Man.” He is such a cutie!
My brother lived in Galveston Bay for a few years before he sold his home and moved to Colorado…loved walking thru the historic homes in Galveston, just a beautiful city. Enjoy your time spent and looking forward to more photos!!
Happy 17th Anniversary!! 🙂 How wonderful! Galveston is a place that we haven’t visited yet (I know…shame on us for being in Texas and not going yet!) When we do, I look forward to going and reading more about Elissa!

Congratulations to your anniversary, and thanks for the pictures of Galveston. We really need to go there some time soon, especially as it’s not too far from Karnes City.
Best regards,
Pit

And, I remember “Galveston” – I loved that song. So there is a remake? I didn’t know. Fabulous shots of the tall ships. Looking forward to see more of Galveston!
Great shots and post Laurie and as usual it’s great to see the cute little man. He is so adorable! 😀
The first picture makes me want one and the rest makes me want to see the place. Beautiful photos.
Laurie, that grandson of yours is such a charmer! You really capture both people and scenery so well. Congratulations to you both!
Blessings ~ Wendy
How cool that the ship is an original and not a replica!! I’ve never been to Galveston … but now will have to add it to the list! Happy Anniversary – thanks for sharing your day with us!
LB, I think you would love seeing the town on your bike. The main road runs right along the beach line, so a lot of nice views.
Seems like it was a hit Laurie 😉 Great Anniversary Celebrations .
The rigging is totally baffling … Little man looking very charming there 🙂
I do love your toasting image! How fun! These are all wonderful images of a special time!
Beautiful setting, wow, and yes that first picture with the icecreams is just delicious ! I can see you had a great day ! Happy anniversary!
Congrats, Laurie! I did some of my courting to that song 🙂
Those pinkish gates make a terrific shot, as does Elissa from almost any angle. We have an original tall ship in our own harbour too so I’m very fond of them.
You bloggers could have a meetup! I’m sure Island Traveller lives near to Galveston as he often features it in his beautiful posts, and I noticed in the comments that Ron Scubadiver (and his lovely wife Lynne) is not far away! You’d all be singing “Galveston, oh-oh Galveston” 🙂
Oh restless jo…I love you…your comments always bring such a smile to me.
🙂
Thanks for the memories! I loved Galveston. I spent more than half my lifetime living in Houston, and have so many wonderful memories of Galvestion, ie….prom night! Madi Gras…My very first trip to Galveston was in 1951 when I was 8yrs old. Our whole family got badly sunburned!! My dad was a broadcaster with KXYZ radio and actually went to work without his shirt on!! 🙂 Thanks again. (I now live in E. Tennessee…retired)
Thank you so much for sharing your memories with me! I have plans to go back someday, so much to see.
A toast to your 17th Laurie!! You really know how to celebrate 🙂 Elissa looks fantastic for being over a century old… looks like your little man enjoyed sightseeing and sharing every bit of the day with you!
Thank you for sharing the good time you had in Galveston 🙂 Great shots of the tall ship shots. Love, love the facial expression of the “little man”!
Happy anniversary sounds like y’all had a great one. We love Galveston also of course our kids live only 45 minutes away from there.
Mine live about an hour away from Galveston♥
What a beautiful place!!
Congratulations on your 17 years together, Laurie. What a wonderful way to celebrate. I do love those tall-masted sailing ships. So Majestic! Yes, I remember the song ‘Galveston’, but never thought about where it actually was. Thanks for showing me some of the beautiful sights there. Your ‘Little Man’ is a cute child. 🙂
WOW! So impressive and so beautiful. Thank you, love, nia
A lovely photo montage of a special occasion–happy, happy to you.
Galveston oh Galveston! That’s what I thought of when I saw your title. The new version is not bad but I like Glen Campbell’s version better. I remember hearing it on the radio when I was a teenager lol 🙂
Happy anniversary and I love your photos! Your little boy is ADORABLE! 🙂
It only takes an hour to get there, but I have not been down to Galveston this season.
I liked the rendition of the old Glen Campbell song, what a good update. Looks like a fab place. We actually had considered a visit here on our honeymoon but they had a bad storm there and so we stayed at a resort on Mustang Island. Maybe we’ll go back for an anniversary too. Happy Anniversary Laurie!
This is so much history here…we couldn’t even cover it all the day we were there.
Laurie:
Looks like you had a great anniversary spending time with the family. Great photos of Nolan.
Thank you Amy.
Lovely images the Laurie but the one of your grandson is exceptional.
Laurie & Matt Happy Anniversary! Looks like you lovers had a marvelous time in Texas, The “little man” is so precious. Those eyes are awesome. I am sure you don’t spoil him too much. How can you help it?
Our 56th Anniversary was the 7th. We went to Angelina’s restaurant in Bonita. Very special! What was the date were you married? Congrats and enjoy many more.
Kathy is doing great! She may be switching from the walker to a cane. She is a real trooper and her PT says her progress is right on the mark. She is coming over Tues nite for Mah Jongg. She already went out with Tom to a friends house for cards on Sat. nite. Has trouble sitting for too long. For a busy lady like she is it is very hard to stay home so much. Every day is one day toward recovery.
Happy you had such a wonderful Anniversary and interesting trip to Texas and Galveston.
See you soon.

I watched the video and I’m fascinated by the place. It must be nice to walk there.Relaxed atmosphere of a country song.I love it.
Never been to Texas. Didn’t know Galveston is on the water. Great photos. Happy Anniversary! xx
O’ I see you’ve printed the words of the song – absolutely wonderful – you’ve made my day.
Wonderful images – what a place to celebrate your anniversary. Living in South Africa my only connection with Galveston is through Glen Campbell song – “Galveston O’ Galveston” which I loved. Always been a kind of a mystical place for me.
Beautiful photos, Laurie! I’ll be looking forward to seeing more. And, now I’ll be hearing Glen Campbell in my head all day… LOL! blessings ~ tanna
We spent many wonderful trips to Galveston when our daughter was young. It is beautiful part of our Country. Lovely photos especially the handsome little man. 🙂
