We Sold Our Yard On E-Bay…

When the economy bottomed out five years ago…so did our irrigation well in our yard. To have it replaced, they told us would be $9000.00! ugh…So we lost our yard and a lot of the bushes etc. For years this has really bothered us but it was just a situation we couldn’t change at that time. I felt bad for my husband because a well kept yard and landscaping is very important to him. Every time we would drive up to our house…he would just shake his head. I have to tell you a funny story…well at the time…not so funny. My in-laws flew down for a visit back years ago, and all of our yard was burnt up and gone. My husband didn’t want his parents to feel sorry for us. So to lightened the mood…He told them, “We sold our yard on E-Bay!”  The look on their faces was priceless! Then it dawned on them that we were teasing. They laughed SO hard and so did we. It felt good to finally have a laugh about the situation.

Fast forward to the present. We are finally in the position to start working to bring back what we had, so slowly we have been replacing bushes, laying new sod in the front yard, and now paver edging to keep the yard out of the landscaping. In Florida, we have what is called Floratam grass. It is not a pretty site. Floratam grass can actually grow up to 3/4″ across the ground per day! This can be a BIG problem when you are trying to keep it out of your garden beds etc.

So after many years of being patient we finally were able to go to Home Depot and have them deliver 2 pallets of pavers and red lava rock to start the job.

We picked the Countryside Wall Pavers for their color and shape. They have a finished edge on both sides. That way you can reverse the direction of them every other paver and not have those big gap openings as you turn the corners. We just love them.

Here you see where hubby pulled out the old small brick and dug a bigger path.

The cute hubster working away laying the pavers…You have been working so hard lately and I am so proud of you! Your diligence and work ethic put me to shame. My 10 hour work days are enough to make me cranky and pout, but you put in 13 hours and have such a great attitude! I really could learn a lesson or two from you.

Side yard view…BEFORE the pavers.

Side yard view…AFTER pavers have been laid.

Front yard view…BEFORE the pavers.

Front yard view…AFTER pavers have been laid.

Beautiful…hubster did a terrific job! I couldn’t be more proud of him.

I love this quote and thought is was so appropriate for this situation. When you are going through a storm…it can be tough!! But oh…the SUNSHINE afterwards is so SWEET isn’t it?

Part one of our landscaping series is here if you missed it.

Can you tell me of a storm you had to weather but now can see the sunshine? I would LOVE to hear.

Leave your sweet comments below.

  1. Loved this story. I identified with Cute Hubby’s longing to have his yard back. And, I know the sweat of laying those pavers! I built a “Secret Garden” at my old house years ago. How I loved that secret place after I darn near disabled myself and my helper doing it. 🙂 I like the finished product here. Really, really pretty.

  2. Yes!I remember having Floratam grass. We were so excited the day the sod truck came and we could lay down our grass. All our neighbors came out and it was like a block party…only in FL 😉

Your yard is gorgeous!!! Great job and it is a lot of hard work to keep it like that. What a great husband you have there!

  5. Thank you SO much for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #51… I’m sorry that I am very late coming by to visit your entry. But I have been fighting being sick all week, trying to fend off a virus and haven’t been doing much besides working and sleeping.. I do hope you’ll forgive me and come by tomorrow to share on Weekly Top Shot’s 1st Anniversary!

  6. Haha!! I think that’s story is so funny!! Way to have a good attitude!! And your yard is absolutely stunning!!! Does your hubby want to come landscape my acre yard? Sometimes I wonder why we wanted such a gigantic yard! Ugh!! Thanks for sharing this at our Weekend Wonders party!!

  7. I know how hard you guys have had to work to get the irrigation, yard, and landscaping done. It’s a lot of work! But definitely looks awesome now

  8. The pavers are a great idea, we had to do that too for the grass runners. Your yard is very pretty, and I especially love the red ground cover, or mulch. I can’t really tell if it’s flowers or bark, but it looks so good against the green grass. 🙂

  9. You have a beautiful yard! I had heard about that type of grass, and am so grateful there is nothing like that up here on the West Coast of Canada… Like you say, you gotta get through the tough stuff first…

  10. your hard work and pride in ownership outshines the time you had to wait. It look wonderful. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday favorite things hop. Big hugs!

  11. Your garden looks beautiful – I think it makes you appreciate it all the more when you’ve had to wait for it! It’s just taken us 8 years to get around to laying our driveway so I know how you feel!!

  12. Your yard looks awesome! Happy to hear that after so much waiting you were able to fix things up and feel good about your yard again.

Thanks for linking up for WW 🙂

  13. I DID have a storm to weather, but can see the sunshine now. 3 of them in fact, hurricanes, all one right after the other. We were out of electricity for 21 days. Quite the experience. 🙂

    Your yard looks fabulous!

  14. Guys sure do like their yards nice. Yours is looking. What patience, and you guys don’t even have snow to cover it up for half the year, like we do.

Please share your thoughts...and thank you for the love!
