Fort Warren…George Island
It was built more than 150 years ago, a fort on an island…a key to the coastal defense of a new nation.
It was transformed into a prison during the civil war, housing hundreds of Confederates within its granite walls, ordinary soldiers and politicians alike.
It served our nation for more than 85 years, as a vigilant sentinel in the harbor.
It was made over into a park, a unique opportunity to experience the past in an extraordinary island setting.
In 1863, a daring escape was made by six Confederate soldiers. They squeezed through slit-holes in the granite walls and made their way to the beach.
Two of the soldiers attempted to swim to Lovell’s Island, but the tide was going out and they were swept out to sea.

Welcome to Fort Warren on George Island…only a 30 minute ferry trip from Boston.
FYI…our vacation to Boston was taken a few years ago…but I just now realized the images weren’t shared on this blog.
Too many good memories to let this slip by.
If you have not taken this excursion…I highly recommend this!
BTW…bring a flash-lite for all the DARK tunnels you go through! It was pitch black!
Would you like to take a guess, what couple was the ONLY one NOT to have a flashlight?
Yes…you guessed it, Tarzan and Jane…Smile!
Have a great day friends.

Stunning location. These days it’d make a good spot to be marooned. I would be cos I’m not much of a swimmer 🙂
nice view 🙂
Looks like a lovely place to spend the afternoon.
Thanks for taking us along on this journey…interesting pieces of history!! And great photos too!!
Sad to say but I’ve lived here in Massachusetts all my life but I’ve never been to George’s Island! Now, after seeing your spectacular photos, I rally want to go! Thanks Laurie!
Oh, and I’ll be sure to bring a flashlight!
I’ve been there before, it was SO pretty! Neat to your pic’s! 🙂
Cheers-
Hi Laurie – it’s been a while since I have commented, but the standard is still very high. Loved this post – one for the future popped into my memory bank!
Thanks for the lovely images and the history lesson Laurie. I had never heard of this island.
LOL! We usually remember best the things NOT to do again. LOL! Great photos. blessings ~tanna
What a beautiful area and a wonderful historic site. Love the eco-friendly green roof!
interesting facts there
I love to travel around with you, Laurie, and see through your eyes. Lovely set of images.
Lovely view from the fort!
Gorgeous views of the place. Thank you for the tip to bring a flash light. I think you well without the flash light 🙂
You take us to such interesting places on your travels and I love tagging along….These shots are beautiful, as always….I hoped someone shared their flashlight with you in those dark tunnels…..
This looks like Pea Patch Island in Delaware where many claim the spirits of imprisoned Confederate soldiers still roam.
Hi Jane! Tee hee! Love the pics!! Yay we can rejoice together tomorrow is FRIDAY!! Hugz Lisa and Bear
what beautiful images and such a historical tour. Love this set of images
Hi Laurie,
I’m reading your post, looking at your lovely pictures and thinking, “wow, this looks like a neat place to visit.” Then I read this was in Boston! Oops, I grew up in Massachusetts and have lived in the Boston area for over 20 years, yet I was not familiar with this place. Hah – sometimes it takes an outsider to point out what is right in front of us!
Nancy
I only found out about it through a visitors brochure/magazine. No one from the Boston area knew about this either!
i love places like this … beautiful and historical. i love the Boston area …i’ll have to add it to my list.
I have some fun memories of that place! The week before our wedding, we took my then-fiances family to the island for a day trip/pic-nic. There are best-men/brother/groom shots of everyone shutting the other one into jail cells! My kids used to go out there with friends a couple of times a summer to hang out. It’s been too long! Thanks for reminding me that this cool place is in “my” city!!
Thank you for sharing your story here at Fort Warren…I loved it.
Love the perspective of that second picture!
looks like my kind of place…
So beautiful captured – and such and interesting place… 🙂
What beautiful blue skies!
What an interesting place! I love that last pic — beautiful!
Awesome post and images Laurie. I wish I had known about this place when I was in Boston in the spring. Looks like I’ll have to go back now 🙂
Beautiful photos Laurie… I would love to visit Fort Warren! Thank you for sharing its history (always fascinating). By the way, your references to Tarzan and Jane always make me giggle 🙂 I love how you always go to great lengths to get “the shot” !
Those soldiers must have been so very slender. I’m sure that I couldn’t get through those slit holes. Maybe just one leg and then I’d be well and truly stuck. 🙂 What an interesting history this place has, Laurie, and I love the beautiful blues in your pics.
What a wonderful trip you had, Laurie! They squeezed through slit-hole — that was incredible… Love the last photo 🙂
You do such a great job of capturing the places you visit. I love how you make that a goal of the time you spend traveling.
Sounds like a must see part of history. Thanks for sharing and thanks so much for your visit to my blog
OMgosh, how malnourished do you have to be to slip thru those slivers in the wall. Frightening! I love learning about history at home and other countries too, thanks for the tour and the tip 😉
Great photos, how could they have slipped through those little holes? Ouch!
Wow! these picture are just gorgeous! love the view of the ocean.
Beautiful, Laurie! It reminds me of Fort Sumpter, off the coast of Charleston, SC. I adore all your photos, but the one looking up the wall is my favorite, I think! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, I have to agree with you. My daughters pictures from Fort Sumpter do have so many similarities.
Looks like a fun adventure, learning the history, and its secrets.
Such a pretty place! Lovely shots.
I have yet to get there – a goal for next summer!!
Yes, you must get there…too fun!
Such stunning photos! You really captured the contrast in lighting and textures that make these scenes come alive!
Lovell’s Island looks rather a swim Laurie !
What a sad end for the Lady in Black after all she had been through 😦
What a beautiful blue sky!
I was wondering if you snuck away there recently …. ! What a perfect day to feature this unique spot ….. on the day when the federal government reopens!
Beautiful shots. I live an hour from Boston and never heard of this site so thank you.
Thank you..very interesting
Greetings
