Fort Warren…George Island
It was built more than 150 years ago, a fort on an island…a key to the coastal defense of a new nation.
It was transformed into a prison during the civil war, housing hundreds of Confederates within its granite walls, ordinary soldiers and politicians alike.
It served our nation for more than 85 years, as a vigilant sentinel in the harbor.
It was made over into a park, a unique opportunity to experience the past in an extraordinary island setting.
In 1863, a daring escape was made by six Confederate soldiers. They squeezed through slit-holes in the granite walls and made their way to the beach.
Two of the soldiers attempted to swim to Lovell’s Island, but the tide was going out and they were swept out to sea.

Welcome to Fort Warren on George Island…only a 30 minute ferry trip from Boston.
FYI…our vacation to Boston was taken a few years ago…but I just now realized the images weren’t shared on this blog.
Too many good memories to let this slip by.
If you have not taken this excursion…I highly recommend this!
BTW…bring a flash-lite for all the DARK tunnels you go through! It was pitch black!
Would you like to take a guess, what couple was the ONLY one NOT to have a flashlight?

This looks like Pea Patch Island in Delaware where many claim the spirits of imprisoned Confederate soldiers still roam.

I’m reading your post, looking at your lovely pictures and thinking, “wow, this looks like a neat place to visit.” Then I read this was in Boston! Oops, I grew up in Massachusetts and have lived in the Boston area for over 20 years, yet I was not familiar with this place. Hah – sometimes it takes an outsider to point out what is right in front of us!

I have some fun memories of that place! The week before our wedding, we took my then-fiances family to the island for a day trip/pic-nic. There are best-men/brother/groom shots of everyone shutting the other one into jail cells! My kids used to go out there with friends a couple of times a summer to hang out. It’s been too long! Thanks for reminding me that this cool place is in “my” city!!

Those soldiers must have been so very slender. I’m sure that I couldn’t get through those slit holes. Maybe just one leg and then I’d be well and truly stuck. 🙂 What an interesting history this place has, Laurie, and I love the beautiful blues in your pics.
